What section leaders are for
Section leaders help each part of the ensemble rehearse well, communicate clearly, and care for people before small problems become large ones.
They are not a separate authority above the conductor or program leader. They are a practical bridge between the room, the music, and the people in their section.
Core responsibilities
- Welcome new members and help them find the right place in the room.
- Notice attendance, confidence, preparation, and pastoral concerns early.
- Share rehearsal and part-specific information with the right people.
- Help members understand expectations around preparation, attendance, and concert readiness.
- Escalate issues to the conductor, program leader, Welfare Officer, or operations team when needed.
Good leadership posture
A section leader serves the section rather than owning it. The posture is calm, clear, humble, musically prepared, and attentive to people who may be new, unsure, or quietly slipping away.
When in doubt, communicate early. Section leadership works best when no one has to guess what is happening.
Escalation
If the issue is musical, speak with the conductor or relevant program leader. If it is pastoral, wellbeing, child safety, or family-related, involve the Welfare Officer or the correct AChA team contact. Do not carry sensitive matters alone.
